The school’s new phone policy has definitely gotten students talking, enforcing phones to be put into small wooden boxes in small rectangle shaped slots, each student having their own numbered slot and having their phones locked away and not allowed to pick up or even look at during class time, or in general. The school district enforces no phones during class time, whatsoever. Although, kids can have them during lunch and during passing periods. Some think it helps them focus, while others feel like it doesn’t really make much of a difference. Senior Sophia Matthys said she sees both sides of it, “I think it’s like it kind of makes sense, but it really doesn’t.” For her, it makes sense during class lessons, but not when students aren’t really doing anything. On the other hand, freshman Aera Wiegand said, “I think I paid the same amount of attention in class with or without my phone.” Wiedand actually likes the policy. “I think it’s kind of a good idea to not have your phone in class, ‘cause then it’s less of a distraction,” Without her phone, she not only focuses more but also starts talking to people more. “I started actually making friends, which I am so happy about” Another senior, Miyah Masters, isn’t a fan. “Honestly, I don’t really like it. I get why the school wants us to stay off our phones, but I feel like it’s too strict. We’re older now, and we should be trusted to make our own decisions.” Masters said it hasn’t really changed how much she pays attention in class, instead, it just makes the day feel longer. “When I finish my work, I can’t use my phone to listen to music or do something quick to pass the time, so I just sit there bored.” Overall, the phone policy has different effects depending on the student. For some, like Wiegand, it’s been a good change. For others, like Matthys and Masters, it hasn’t really changed much — except maybe making class a little more boring.
