As of September, there have been 53 school shootings in the year 2025. Does the recent gun violence worry you? Freshman Skylea Creel said, “Yes, because the world is just getting worse and worse and worse. Who knows what it’s going to come to.” said Creel. On June 25th, 2025, around midnight, a group of teenagers shot and killed 16-year-old Trey Wright outside a house in South Carolina. The group was screaming around him. Wright was shot in the chest at close range. One suspect was released on bond, but all were charged with murder. The ones who didn’t shoot have a bond of around $20,000. Student teacher Miss Baca had her own thoughts on the incident, “For this specific crime, they knew what they were doing. I would go as far as to say, I think it was premeditated because it says the girlfriend got with him only a couple of weeks before, which is a red flag to me. With how many people there were in it, they had to have had something like a ground chat or a discussion or something that would make it a premeditated murder.” There is another argument that could be made about what age someone should be charged with a crime. Sophomore Luke Stoffer said, “I think eighteen, like how it is now. It is a bit difficult because you know, kids can still cause crimes. A lot of people take advantage of that, but it is hard to charge a kid as an adult, especially when they’re still not fully developed. There’s so many different cases that you can look into.” said Stoffer. These young adults were charged and put on a bond of $20,000. The only person who didn’t get a bond was the one who shot Wright. Children younger than this are able to have bonds and be charged with a crime, depending on the crime. Creel added, “If you’re really young, obviously not because you don’t know, but if you’re of knowledge, then you should be judged.” Gun violence has been talked about more often, and more cases have appeared, like the Trey Wright case. Gun violence has been occurring every few months in school districts across the world and it worries people. Baca added, “As someone going into the teaching profession, yeah, I’m worried about gun violence in schools.”
