2020 Democratic Candidates 

 

Bernie Sanders (D)

Endorsements: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, current Representative from New York, Ilhan Omar, current representative from Minnesota, The Chicago Maroon, National Union of Healthcare Workers, Young Democrats of America

Platform: Sanders shares many issues with Warren, as well as affordable housing for all, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and allowing felons to vote while incarcerated

Experience: Mayor of Burlington, VT (1981-1989), Representative from Vermont (1991-2007), Senator from Vermont (2007-present)

Other: doesn’t take campaign donations from big corporations, entirely grassroots funded, especially popular with young Democrats

Joe Biden (D):

Endorsements: Abby Finkennaur, current Representative from Iowa, John Kerry, former Secretary of State, Andrew Cuomo, current governor of New York, Mike Matson, current mayor of Davenport, International Association of Firefighters

Platform: affordable health care, ban assault weapons, Clean Energy Revolution plan, rebuild infrastructure/reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower drug prices

Experience: private lawyer, New Castle County council member (1970-1972) Senator from Delaware (1973-2009) Vice President of the US (2009-2017)

Other: one of the youngest people ever elected to the senate, has been awarded the Presidential medal of freedom with distinction.

Elizabeth Warren (D) 

Endorsements: Julián Castro, former housing secretary and 2020 presidential candidate, Mike Tramontina, former executive director of the Iowa Democratic Party, The Des Moines Register, The New York Times, The Progressive Change Campaign Committee

Platform: Tax hikes for the wealthy and corporations, student loan debt relief/free public college, universal childcare, enact the Green New Deal, expand social security

Experience: Law professor at the Universities of Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Harvard, chair of the Congressional Oversight Committee (2008-2010), special adviser at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (2010-2011), Massachusetts senator (2012-present) 

Other: authored eleven books on the economy, the middle class, and personal finance, switched allegiance from Republican party to Democratic party in 1996, first woman senator from Massachusetts

Pete Buttigieg (D): 

Endorsements: Dave Loebsack, current Representative from Iowa, Anthony Lake, former Executive Director of UNICEF, LGBTQ Victory Fund, George Takei, actor and activist, Tom Henderson, former Polk County, Iowa Democratic Party Chair

Platform: Medicare-for-all-who-want-it, expand mental health services, aggressively lower drug prices, supports DACA, spend up to $2 trillion on climate policies, increase funding for HBCUs, strict gun control

Experience: US Navy Reserve officer (2009-2017), mayor of South Bend, Indians (2012-2020)

Other: went on a seven month tour of duty as a counterintelligence officer in Afghanistan, would be the first openly gay president

Andrew Yang (D): 

Endorsements: Cameron Kasky, co-founder of March for Our Lives, Mike Honda, former Representative from California, The Sun, Bari Weiss, opinion writer for the NY Times, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX

Platform: ranked choice voting, campaign funding vouchers for everyone, act fast on climate change/enact the Green New Deal, move to human-centered capitalism, paid family leave, $1000/month in universal basic income

Experience: corporate lawyer, founded Venture for America, 

Other: selected by the Obama administration as a Champion of Change and Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, very focused on job loss because of automation

Tom Steyer (D):

Endorsements: Ed Fallon, former Representative from Iowa, Shedron Williams, current Representative from South Carolina, Jeff Berman, member of the DNC, John L. Scott, current Senator from South Carolina

Platform: congressional term limits, establish a national referendum process, make voting more accessible, create a Civilian Climate Corps, universal health care 

Experience: founded hedge fund management company, political advocate for progressive/democratic causes, philanthropist

Michael Bloomberg (D):

Endorsements: Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington, DC, Alan Webber, mayor of Santa Fe, Scott Peters, Representative from California, Carla Brailey, member of the DNC

Platform: clean energy economy, lower drug prices, ban assault weapons/ more effective background checks, plan to cut homelessness in half by 2025, build on the ACA

Experience: founded several start-ups, governor of NYC (2001-2013), founded clean energy and public health initiatives

Other: has a net worth of $52 billion, campaign is self-funded, ran for mayor as a Republican, but has since switched to the Democratic party

Tulsi Gabbard (D):

Endorsements: Mike Gravel, former Senator from Alaska and 2020 presidential candidate, Dennis Kucinich, former Representative from Ohio, Bill Paparian, former mayor of Pasadena, California, Our Revolution Broward County

Platform: comprehensive immigration reform, OFF Fuels for A Better Future Act, campaign finance reform, reduce mass incarceration, decriminalize marijuana, anti-intervention foreign policy

Experience: senate legislative aide (2007-2009), council member on Honolulu City Council (2011-2012) Representative from Hawai’i (2013-present)

Other: a Hawaii army national guard major, has opposed LGBTQ rights in the past, differs from democratic establishment on several issues

Deval Patrick (D):

Endorsements: David H. Watters, current senator from New Hampshire

Platform: transportation/infrastructure overhaul, universal Pre-K and free community college, reduce carbon emissions/use biofuels, proponent of LGBTQ rights

Experience: lawyer for the NAACP, assistant attorney general for civil rights (1994-1997), Massachusetts governor (2005-2014)

Other: signed law in 2008 helping to grow use of biofuels in Massachusetts, helped defeat 2007 amendment making same-sex marriage illegal

 

2020 Republican Candidates 

 

Donald Trump (R)

Endorsements: Jair Bolsonaro, current president of Brazil, Lindsey Graham, current senator from North Carolina, Joni Ernst, current senator from Iowa, National Right to Life Committee, Great America Committee

Platform: reduce illegal immigration/reform immigration system, lower taxes for individuals and corporations, repealing Obamacare/scale back Medicaid, less involvement in foreign affairs, limit abortion access, boost fossil fuel development, repeal environmental protections

Experience: current President of the United States (2017-present)

Other: currently in the middle of an impeachment trial, considered by many experts to be one of the worst presidents in the history of the U.S.

Bill Weld (R)

Endorsements: former Iowa Representative Jim Leach

Platform: robust guest worker program, rejoin Paris Climate accords, free trade/lower tariffs, cut government spending, cut taxes, support for school choice

Experience: private lawyer, U.S. attorney for Massachusetts (1981-1986), assistant U.S. attorney general (1986-1987), governor of Massachusetts (1990-1997)

Other: has run for office several times as a Libertarian, described more as a fiscal conservative than a social conservative, openly spoken against Trump

Joe Walsh (R):

Endorsements: N/A

Platform: opponent of the ACA, allocate more resources towards asylum cases, put economic interests above climate change, pro-life, anti-LGBTQ rights, extending tax cuts

Experience: Representative from Illinois (2010-2010), conservative radio talk show host

Other: supported Trump during 2016 election, but has since become very critical of him,  has a history of controversial statements 

Other: spent more money on the 2014 and 2016 elections than any other individual donor, ranked #387 on list of 400 richest people in America
