This month the boys soccer team had a score of four to one. As of now, they have had games against Burlington, Clinton, Dubuque Hempstead, Davenport North and now Davenport Assumption. Recently our boys gained a new soccer coach: Phil Armer. This is different for the boys but definitely not bad. They have been practicing after school and often on weekends. They continued to put in work even after their losses. Junior Jasper Burke added, “The practices after the North game, we worked a lot harder.” Freshman Jensen Mier likes the new coaching style, “He pushes us to be a better team overall…he always corrects us, instead of yelling at us, he tells us what to do better.” These coaching skills have also brought the team together.
Many enjoyed all the new relationships and the building of the team. Freshman Atlee Ridgeway said, “We’re all like family.” Burke agreed, “I feel like we’re a better team this year.” This connection was shown in their excitement for games. Sophomore Landon Hurst stated, “I think Assumption will be a really good game. They’re on an equal playing field as us so it should be a really tough match.” Others like Ridgway were looking forward to games for other reasons, “I would say I was most looking forward to the North game just because I have a lot of friends on the team.” Although our boys are doing great, they did have a loss to Davenport North. This was tough for our boys. Hurst said, “I think we came on too confident in the first half and we stepped up our defense in the second half and prevented them from scoring a lot.” Ridgway said, “I was very disappointed about the outcome, but we had to keep our heads high.” Our boys have continued to progress and we can’t wait to see what else they can accomplish in the remaining weeks of the season.
