Davenport school board approved changing the high schools’ schedules for the 2025-2026 school year. Students will be required to take 8, forty-five-minute classes, a big change in structure from the current schedule. Staff member, Mrs. Cross stated, ”I am against it because it is a large change from the current and discussed schedule. It’s not the same proposal or voted change.” This is true as the school board voted to approve a modified schedule that would include both 45-minute classes and 90-minute classes. However, due to the complexity of the modified schedule, it will not be implemented next year; instead,an eight-period day was created.
Not all are upset with the new schedule change, though. Freshman Kaleb Phillips said, “Since the blocks are shorter classes, I could see classes going by faster.”
This is a familiar format for many of the freshmen because it is similar to their middle school schedules. Incoming freshmen may have an easier time adjusting to their new school due to the similar routine.
Students from West and Central high schools protested these changes on Monday, April 28th, though only a handful of students left 4th block to protest that day due to lack of knowledge of the protest. Whether people are disappointed or approve of the new high school schedule, it is happening next year. Adjustments will be made by students and staff to do what we are here for: to learn and grow, whether we like it or not.
