“The student council was the group here at Central who were interested in bringing back school spirit, they initiated the process of acquiring a new mascot,” says teacher and Student Council leader,Ashley Hamerlinck after elaborating on the news of the school mascot. The process of finding a mascot maker alongside getting approved by the school were some of the more difficult challenges faced when working towards bringing the Blue Devil back to life. Despite the bumps in the road, the Blue Devil was in transit and took roughly three months to finally arrive. The mascot costume itself cost about $6,000 after shipping and handling according to Hammerlink.
“We think by having a new mascot we are able to bring school spirit to all events… The response we have received about the new mascot is all positive from people in the community. We hope that by having our mascot at all events, it will help us evaluate our spirit and get the crowds pumped and energized,” Hamerlinck emphasized as word of the mascot spread through Central High School’s hallways.
“I really like it. I think it’s a good way to show school spirit besides cheerleaders,” said junior Paige Herrin. While the student who dresses as the mascot, by tradition, is to remain anonymous, many have their suspicions. “Micah Roldan..Because he magically disappears when the mascot comes out,” Herrin said. On the idea, appointing Junior Micah Roldan as the Blue Devil, he commented on the mascot mystery, “Oh, I have my suspicions.. My theory is that there’s not just one Blue Devil.. A hidden society..” Even as the many controversies about who may be the Blue Devil brew, there were many other questions asked when it came to the devil themself. “Oof. That’s a good question…Word on the street is Micah Roldan,” junior Evelyn Toher said. Many students had questions and opinions voiced when the mascot was first introduced as many were interviewed. “I think it’s really fun. It’s exciting being able to walk around and nobody knows who you are or what you do… it’s like some kind of mystery,” said an anonymous source.
Central High School’s School spirit has seen immense progress from the recent revamping of many of Central’s sports and of course the recent addition of the Blue Devil. When asking students on how they felt about the amp in school spirit, Micah Roldan gave insight on his thoughts, “School spirit is everything. If people are excited to go out to the games, that can affect the energy..” Toher agreed, “I think it’ll take away from the fact that we’re losing. It’s gonna make people happier during it.” Herrin also agreed, thinking it’s a good way to represent us, “It’s a good way to get the crowds up and moving around and excited.” Herrin is happy to have more support not only for the cheer team, but for all of the Central high school’s teams.
